Trump Faces Scrutiny for “False, Unsubstantiated” Iran Claims
Trump repeated a long-debunked assertion that he had called for the killing of Osama bin Laden in a 2000 book. The book only mentions bin Laden in passing, and the al-Qaida leader was killed in 2011 by an operation ordered by then-President Barack Obama.
He also claimed that most US aircraft losses in the Iran conflict were caused by friendly fire.
Reports indicate that multiple aircraft were actually shot down by Iranian forces, including an F-15 and an A-10, while an E-3 surveillance plane was destroyed in a separate strike.
The president further reiterated that he had “ended eight wars,” a statement deemed false, as some of the cited conflicts were not wars or did not conclude.
Trump also repeated an unverified allegation that Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro sent large numbers of prisoners to the US, for which experts say there is no supporting evidence.
Additionally, he overstated US troop levels in South Korea and falsely claimed that former Vice President Kamala Harris never visited the US-Mexico border.
Several of Trump’s other statements during the conference could also not be independently confirmed, according to reports.
